Patients with coronary artery disease were randomized to 8 weeks of a vegan or AHA-recommended diet to compare the effects on high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein (hsCRP) levels. The hsCRP was 32% lower in those on the vegan diet compared with those on the AHA diet (P=.02). The degree of reduction in body mass index and waist circumference was similar in the two groups. There was no difference between the two groups in the markers of glycemic control.
A vegan diet was associated with a reduction in hsCRP levels among patients with coronary artery disease, and this may be a marker of improved clinical outcomes.
