This is a review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials testing the impact of dietary viscous fiber on glycemic control and CVD risk in patients with type 2 diabetes. Overall, 28 trials were included in this analysis, with a total of 1394 participants. With a median dose of approximately 13 g/day, dietary viscous fiber was associated with a mean reduction in HbA1c of −0.58% (P=.0002). Fasting glucose and insulin resistance were also reduced. The evidence was rated as of moderate certainty.

The results indicate that dietary intake of viscous fiber can reduce HbA1c and improve fasting blood glucose and insulin resistance in patients with type 2 diabetes.
