TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- To determine if supplementation with vitamin D or omega-3 fatty acids reduce risk of cardiovascular disease or cancer, these authors conducted a randomized controlled trial of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and omega-3 fatty acids among 25,871 US adults >50 years old. The primary endpoints were any type of invasive cancer and major cardiovascular events. This is a report of the results from the comparison of omega-3 fatty acids with placebo.
- Over a follow-up of more than 5 years, supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids did not result in a lower incidence of invasive cancer or cardiovascular events compared with placebo.
